CPPS Names Larry Morales as Head Boys Basketball Coach
College Place Public Schools has announced the hiring of veteran educator and coach Larry Morales as the next Head Boys Basketball Coach at College Place High School, effective immediately. Morales will also join the district as a certified teacher at John Sager Middle School beginning with the 2026-27 school year.
Morales brings nearly 20 years of experience in education and coaching, including the past 16 seasons as head boys basketball coach at Canutillo High School near El Paso, Texas. The hiring reunites Morales with College Place Public Schools Superintendent Jim Fry, who first hired him in 2007 while serving as principal at Canutillo High School.
When the position became available following the departure of Coach Curtis Pumphrey after five seasons, Fry reached out to Morales to discuss the opportunity to bring his experience and leadership to the Walla Walla Valley.
"It is a rare occasion in your career when you get to hire the same great person in two different places," said Fry. "Larry is an incredibly passionate educator and coach who cares deeply about the success of young people. He will be a great addition to College Place Public Schools."
During his tenure at Canutillo, Morales compiled 261 varsity victories, led his teams to 13 postseason appearances, captured seven opening-round playoff championships, and advanced to the State Sweet 16 twice. He has also helped develop numerous student-athletes who continued their careers at the collegiate level.
"When Superintendent Fry first reached out, I knew I needed to take a serious look at the opportunity. As my wife Jen and I spent time in College Place, we were immediately struck by the warmth, support, and family atmosphere that exists here. It became clear that this is a special place. The quality of the student-athletes, resources, and community support make this a program that is poised to do great things. Jen and I are excited to become part of the College Place family, and I can't wait to get started."
Beyond the wins, Morales has earned a reputation for building disciplined, resilient teams and developing young men of strong character. His commitment to student growth, leadership, and accountability has been a hallmark of his coaching career. He also invested heavily in youth development through annual basketball camps and year-round skill development programs.
Morales was inducted into the Sul Ross State University Hall of Honor in 2018 following a standout collegiate career that included conference championships, NCAA Sweet 16 competition, and recognition as the university's Male Athlete of the Year in both 2003 and 2004.
"I am really excited to have someone with his great level of success and experience that I know will translate into success for our team in the SCAC (South Central Athletic Conference). I am confident that Coach Morales can build a successful program at CPHS," commented CPHS Principal Aguilar.
Morales will begin leading the boys basketball program immediately and will join the teaching staff at Sager Middle School for the 2026-2027 school year.
