HIGHLY CAPABLE 

CPPS serves Highly Capable students at each school as follows: Kindergarten through 5th-grade students at Davis Elementary School, 6-8 grade students at John Sager Middle School, and 9th -12th grade students at College Place High School. Washington State law requires that all school districts identify their "most highly capable" students and provide a continuum of services to those students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

DEFINITION OF A HIGHLY CAPABLE STUDENT

Students who are highly capable may possess, but are not limited to, the following learning characteristics: Highly Capable students are students who perform or show potential for performing at significantly advanced academic levels when compared with others of their age, experiences, or environments. Outstanding abilities are seen within students' general intellectual aptitudes, specific academic abilities within a specific domain. These students are present not only in the general populace but are present within all protected classes.

1. Capacity to learn with an unusual depth of understanding, to retain what has been learned, and to transfer learning to new situations;

2. Capacity and willingness to deal with increasing levels of abstraction and complexity earlier than their chronological peers;

3. Ability to learn quickly in their area(s) of intellectual strength; and

4. Capacity for intense concentration and/or focus.

October 1: Nomination packets due (all grade levels).

October 1 - November 1: Highly Capable Testing Window- Building Assessment Coordinator will inform parents of exact dates of testing. 

April 1: Nomination packets due (all grades- currently enrolled students).

A letter will be sent home once testing has been completed. You will be contacted with your student's test result.

NOTIFICATION OF IDENTIFICATION PROCESS

If you have any questions regarding the Highly Capable Program please contact the following.  We have two windows for Highly Capable nomination each year in our district, fall, and spring. The deadline for applications is early October (all grade levels) and early April (all grades- currently enrolled students). We notify parents, students, and community members in a variety of ways, including the district website, morning announcements at school, and information in school newsletters.
