Instructional Delivery...At-Home/Distance Learning 2.0:
So what will distance learning 2.0 look and feel like? Is it more of the same from this past spring?
Last spring we were in a state of emergency, and received some structured guidelines from OSPI, such as on grading. This fall we are returning to the pre-COVID standard grading practices and procedures we used as a school. Each teacher and department will communicate his or her specific grading scales and grading procedures in their syllabi. Students will still be assessed on progress towards learning standards, and students will be given opportunities for re-assessments. In short, students, the grades matter and the workload will increase. We need you to engage with us this fall! You need to own your learning! Remember the mantra: This is hard, you can do it, we are here to help you!
The daily bell schedule is linked below. Students will be expected to attend live learning sessions every morning. Students will have three periods of live synchronous learning every day in the AM, and time in the PM for follow-up small group learning and extension activities. Teachers will also be available from 2:00-3:00pm every day for virtual office hours. We will alternate days between periods 1-2-3 and periods 4-5-6. A full school year calendar will also be made available on the school website.
Daily Bell Schedule: On the school website is a link to our bell schedules for the different types of structured days (fully remote, hybrid, and full return). The hybrid bell schedule is still being finalized but once completed will be updated on the site.
Attendance will be taken through your synchronous live learning sessions. It is the expectation that students attend their live learning sessions. Attendance will be tracked and monitored for engagement throughout the distance learning environment.
Parents, please consider talking to your student about a consistent location in the home that can be used for their live learning sessions every morning. Whether that is the kitchen table, the front porch, etc…a routine for the student to be in the same place at the same time everyday, will go along way to ensuring their engagement in the distance learning environment.
We also have aligned the virtual live learning sessions with Sager and Davis, ensuring that our high school students, who were taking care of younger siblings in the spring, will be freed up for their own learning without having to watch their little brother or sister.
Students who are unable to attend the live learning will be able to view the recording of the session. Each teacher will record their classes and will expect that students who missed it live, will still be expected to complete the work and review the video of the class.
The learning within each course will be more rigorous than it was in the spring. We will still utilize Google Classroom as our standard platform, and have made some alignments across the district, so that the student and guardian experience is consistent across all teachers. Teachers may have supplemental links to other online platforms that support the core learning that will reside on their Google Classrooms. You also will probably see more teacher bitmoji’s than ever before!
Teachers will communicate specific course information and learning expectations those first few days of the school year. We will also have a virtual version of an Open House where parents will get an opportunity to meet the teachers virtually. Stay tuned for more information on our virtual Open House.
Certain populations of students may be invited to attend in-person instruction, even during the Distance Learning 2.0 environment. Those case-by-case situations will be communicated to parents once the school year is underway.
Lunch pick-up will be available, similar to this past spring, at Davis Elementary, Sager/CPHS, and possibly a third location to be determined. We will offer the bag lunches from 12:00-1:00pm daily.
Students, who do not qualify for free/reduced lunch, may purchase a bagged lunch at these locations.
Social Emotional Well-Being:
We recognize that during this time of uncertainty and heightened stress, student’s mental well-being must be a top priority. We are sensitive to the trauma that COVID-19 has created in many of our students and their families, and are here to assist and support our entire community. We also recognize that adolescents, by its very nature, is meant to be a time of peer interaction as young people “prepare to leave the nest to forge their own communities”. In a time of distancing and limited contact, this can be especially hard for our teenagers who are hard wired for physical peer interaction at this age.
Our counseling department is working actively to create Social Emotional Well-Being plans for our students. Checking in with kids as often as we can, forging strong relationships that help to mitigate the impact of trauma on young people’s lives. Our teachers continue to receive training to equip them to be strong social emotional educators, and we will listen and respond compassionately to students who are hurting, impacted, or scared in today’s world. If you have any need to talk to our school counselor, Ms. Silva-Ponds regarding a concern for your student, please reach out to us.
