Hawks Fall Season Roundup!

HAWKS  FALL SEASON ROUNDUP - 2019

Hawks Cross Country

Head Coach Darin Durand:

The 2019 XC season has been our best season so far in our 5 year program history. It all began with summer conditioning, and as a result we saw many team records fall on both the boys and girls teams fall.

On the boys team we had or highest ever participation of boys (31). Each runner made great gains and accomplished many PRs as their fitness improved. Our boys varsity and JV teams won their first invitational meet this season in Umatilla. Additionally the boys varsity launched into the CPXC record books by placing the top 7 runners within the top 12 all time records. Four boys made SCAC East All League - Joshua Courtney, Azaiah Garcia, Jacob Courtney and Eli Durand. Joshua and Azaiah qualified for the state meet. Josh went on to finish 69th at State in a personal record time of 17:31.7.  The boys team narrowly missed advancing to State as a team by 6 points. Thankfully we keep our varsity team intact and add some talented 8th graders next year. The future is bright.

For the girls, we kept up our tradition of sending Hawks to the state meet. Ele Frokic and Tamra Ostrander led the way for the Hawks by earning SCAC East All League honors as well as qualifying for State. Ele set a new school record in the 5k distance at State by running 20:30.8. The rest of the girls Hawks team is young, led by freshman Lena Weaver, who earned her first letter as a Hawk, setting many personal records this season. Tiana Tran, Madison Thompson and Kendyl Higham all worked hard and saw the payoff with strong finishes to their season.  As we lose two seniors to graduation, we are looking for more girls to join these strong young women next year and take the XC challenge and push themselves to a whole new level. Who will be the next to rise up and soar like a Hawk?

We have many people to be thankful for, such as parents/families of runners, athletic department, CP Boosters, bus drivers, CPPS staff who supported/helped at our home meet, and the greater Hawks community for your continued support.

Hawks Volleyball

Head Coach Angie Potts:

The 2019 volleyball season has ended but it was full of highlights and success.  We traveled to two tournaments as part of our schedule in order to gain more playing time.  In each tournament we placed in the top half and won bracket #3 at the Sundome tournament in Yakima.  We finished 3rd in league and qualified for districts for the 2nd year in a row. We lost our first two matches at districts but had more competitive scores than we did in our first year of qualifying.

Our JV and C teams were highly successful with each team only having one league loss this year.  Our JV team also won their tournament at Granger, winning every set they played that day. We look forward to an exciting future!

Hawks Football

Head Coach Donald Ponds:

The Hawks football team had high hopes coming off a 5-5 season during the 2018 season, and at the beginning we did not disappoint with 2 shutout victories on the road and a tough hard fought home loss against perennial power Connell. As the season wore on injuries became a major factor in how the remaining league games would play out. Even though our overall record was 3-7, every team got our best and we made them work for those wins. In the end, we got a big glimpse into the future of what can be if paired with hard work, discipline and will; after winning our last game of the season.

The thing that I am proud of most is that this team did not quit and they took on the challenge each and every week. Several players stepped up and filled in for those injured or absent. Those players did a great job and have built confidence going into the next season. Our season can be summed up in this quote by Nelson Mandela, "the greatest glory in living lies in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." Keep moving forward and always persevere in life and in sports. Good Job, Hawks!!!

Hawks Girls Soccer

Head Coach Jesse Cruz:

Well, my first season coaching the CPHS girls soccer program, it didn’t go the way we planned, but the lessons we learned go far beyond our expectations, we might not have been the most talented team in the league, but they gave their best effort and we grew and improved as a team all year!

I would like to highlight the successes in coming together as a team, and learning about WE, and not ME, now that’s an accomplishment! Not to mention, that the girls earned a TEAM  ACADEMIC AWARD for achieving a 3.0 to 3.49 GPA! We were also voted #1 for Sportsmanship in the SCAC East and in addition Shea Kasenga was named 1st Team ALl-League and Courtney Meliah earned Honorable Mention so we did great!!!!  Let’s continue to do the right things on and off the field! GO HAWKS!
