Adopt-a-Student Scholarship Program

The United Way of Walla Walla and College Place Public Schools have partnered to develop the Adopt-a-Student Program, a scholarship foundation to help eliminate financial barriers for all students who lack financial means to fully participate in school-sponsored programs, activities, or academic experiences. The Adopt-a-Student Program is now part of the United Way’s Annual Fundraising Campaign.

Requests to access the resources may be submitted by teachers, counselors, coaches, club advisors, and students. All funding requests will be reviewed and approved by the Adopt-a-Student Scholarship Committee.

The Adopt-a- Student concept took shape in the Fall of 2018 when Communications Director Heidi Wells and Executive Director of United Way of Walla Walla Christy Lieuallen met to discuss collaborative efforts between their two entities. Wells shared with Lieuallen how poverty levels have a negative impact for students in College Place as nearly 50% of the district’s students qualify for free and/or reduced lunch. The district works very hard to have minimal fees associated with participation but there are still costs that some kids simply cannot afford and that may limit student involvement.

“During the 2018-2019 school year, the district’s employees donated $1,700 to the Adopt-a-Student campaign through payroll deduction and direct donations,” said Wells. "This last school year we gave out $1,100 in scholarships to over 30 students. We are hoping these funds give our CPPS students a chance to prepare for college, learn new skills, stay engaged, participate in sports or extra curricular activities without the worry of how their family will pay for it.”

CPPS runs the annual United Way Giving Campaign November 1-November 30 of each year. However, employees can give at anytime during the year to Adopt-a-Student Program. This year we will open the scholarship opportunities to students as Davis.
