Principal's Message
Dear Parents, It is a pleasure for me to write my first annual report for John Sager Middle School. The staff at Sager seek to provide the best in educational opportunities for all students. I am pleased to present to you a report of our performance over the last year. In this report you will find information about Sager, including information on student performance, programs, budget, and demographics. Throughout this last year, our staff has been focused on developing a school improvement plan, fondly referred to as the SIP. Our SIP targets reading, writing and math. By looking at our curriculum, instruction and assessment practices in these areas, we hope to steadily improve student learning. Sager's schedule was revamped this year to help ensure that teachers are teaching in their content area strength. We also tried to lower class sizes and lengthen fourth period to facilitate a school wide reading time. As our students face an ever changing world, every possible resource needs to be leveraged to guarantee their success. Parents have always been an irreplaceable part of the puzzle. Because of the challenging goals set forth in the No Child Left Behind Act, parental involvement has become imperative. By asking your children regularly about their homework and class work, helping them with difficult assignments, and consistent contact with their teachers, parents send a strong signal that school is important, and that their personal best is always expected. Thank you to all of our parents, community members and business partners that have helped to support the learning of Sager students. If you have any questions, or would like more specific ways in which you can help your student succeed, please contact our office at 525-5300. Eric Price

Assessment Procedures
The State of Washington mandates two tests at John Sager Middle School. They are the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) for the eighth gade students and the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) for seventh grade students. Sager School presently admnisters these tests in English to more than 25% ofits students who have recently been non-native English speakers. Last year the district began using functional level tests which are specific to each grade's curriculum and will measure each child's growth during the year. These tests are used in addition to daily observations, classroom work, and unit tests to help measure how well each child is learning. Classroom work, however, is the best and most reliable measure of a child's progress in school. 8th Grade WASL Testing
