What is Destination Imagination?
Destination Imagination is based on the concept of divergent thinking – understanding that there is more than one way to solve a problem. Every year Destination Imagination offers to every team a selection of Team Challenges. The Team Challenge allows team members to choose the Challenge they are most interested in solving and then to devote their creative energies to solving the Challenge in their own way. The Challenges are not easy; teams will spend several months developing their own unique answers. In addition each team competes in an instant challenge that they need to solve right on the spot. They are fast paced tests of ingenuity that are fun and stimulating.
Regional Tournament for the Central Region was in Wenatchee on March 11 th , 2006.
Challenges this Year:
(Our teams competed in these three challenges)
Challenge A: Back At You
Tides come in and go out, birds migrate every Spring and Fall, yo-yos and boomerangs come back to you. In nature and by design, things are made to leave and return again. Your Challenge is to create a round trip Delivery Device and Receiver that repeatedly sends balls back and forth.
Team of Marcus Agidius, Cameron Davis, Alec Gauthier, Leslie Prendiville, Traci Schmidt, and Vanessa Wyckoff. This team won second at regionals. This team solved their challenge by creating a story about Lewis and Clark and the Corp of Discovery. Their ping-pong balls were launched much like a pinball machine, while 20 feet away they went through a six-inch hole. They returned through a track back to the start, just as Lewis and Clark did to St. Louis. Due to how close they scored to the first place team, this team has been invited to the state tournament.
It's a little bit wild and a whole lot dangerous, as you learn when your Safari takes a DIsastrous turn! No matter how prepared you are for your adventure, you never know what you are going to meet around the next bend…that's why you and your team are prepared with an Original Innovative Device that will get your adventure back on track. WARNING: This Improv Challenge is not for the faint of heart! If you love decoding symbols, exploring the unknown and can prepare an Improv solution in 30 minutes, this Challenge is perfect for you!
Sager fielded two teams in this area:
Improv I was made up of: Sydney Christensen, Andrew Glaeser, Shaylee Hill, and Alina Reese. This team won first at regionals. In thirty minutes this team created a scene concerning a broken set of brakes, a musk ox, set on the Amazon River. This team also won the instant challenge round for all Improv groups. This team has been invited to the state tournament.
Improv II was made up of: Nigel Melling, Brooke Thompson, Maressa Trunkey, Frances Ungerecht, and Lindsie Wagner. This team won second at regionals. In thirty minutes this team created a scene involving giant cockroaches invading the camp and a desert tortoise. Due to how close they scored to the first place team, this team has been invited to the state tournament.
Challenge E: Inside DImension
It's one of those sayings that has been around for years. But have you ever
imagined the interesting, amusing and unexpected secrets you could find out
if walls could talk? What things might the walls of your home tell you about
the people who have lived there? Imagine what the walls of ancient structures
could tell us if they could only speak! What might they say about the Architect
of the structure? Your Challenge is to reveal the real inside story about a
structure of your teams' choosing as the creation tells the story of the creator!
And for a real Inside Dimension, build two Structures of Wood and Glue that
fit inside one another and test them to see how much weight they can hold.
Team of Samuel Alazar, Parker Davis, Alex Feucht, Chinonso Opara, Drew Reinland, and Dylan Shenefield. This team studied the life of Buckminster Fuller and his geodesic domes. They created a unique puppet show with accompanying theme music while crushing a balsa wood structure. Due to how close they scored to the first place team, this team has been invited to the state tournament.
