Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

John Sager Middle School is the home for the district’s seventh and eighth grade students. This facility has a current enrollment of 142 students.

The College Place School District serves a mobile and ethnically diverse population of students. John Sager Middle School is no exception. Our building mission statement, taken from the Sager Parent Handbook, speaks to our commitment to educate all children regardless of mobility, native language or ethnic origin.

At John Sager Middle School we have focused our improvement efforts on academic achievements to help all students learn the Washington State Standards. We have used the following 5 step process to do this important work.

Step 1. We started our school improvement process by reviewing “Best Practices” schools and districts that are achieving at the 90% level of their students learning academic standards. This promotes the belief that all kids can learn and we control enough variables to make sure all students achieve. We have listed our control variables and built rubrics to model “At Standard Performance” as teachers.

Step 2: Effective collaboration by team/department and school.  Each grade level and department has agreed upon “what effective collaboration looks like to improve student achievement”.  Davis Elementary, Meadow Brook Intermediate and Sager Middle School’s have moved to the next level of build Professional Learning Communities.  The three schools have begun a process of Vertical Alignments in all grade levels and for Specialists too.  Vertical Alignment of Teams links teachers with peers who teach content above and below their grade level.  Thus all grade levels are working to meet the same goals and objectives.  Teachers have also developed a process of Mapping the Curriculum utilized to focus on the State Standards.

Step 3: Each team has selected their beginning Grade Level Expectations (GLE) focus. These objectives are what the team has selected as the most important learning’s to start the assessment tracking for each student. Clear agreed upon focus is one of our most important control variables. Teachers have also developed a process of Mapping the Curriculum utilized to focus on the State Standards.  Curriculum mapping will one day be the process by which a teacher or team determines the needs of classes and individual students.

Step 4: These goals to improve student achievement are WASL aligned from reviewing our WASL results. This was done by whole group on a late start Wednesday and several teams reviewed each student’s WASL results to help them select the areas to focus upon to help all students learn. Teachers and teams were provided the individual and classroom scores from last year’s WASL scores.

Step 5: We are using our Late Start Wednesdays to work as collaborative teams to select learning targets, set goals, build assessments, share results of assessments, use student tracking tools to share, monitor & adjust our teaching efforts, thus creating synergistic teamwork to improve student learning for all.  The breakthrough at our school will be caused by hard work and commitment of teachers using effective collaboration, classroom data systems, and regularly scheduled meetings between each grade level/department looking at actual student data for each student. They will discuss in detail, how to help each student make a year’s growth in each main subject area, i.e., reading, writing, and math. Teachers will share their successes and challenges to assure learning for all students.

If you have questions or need more information please let me know.
