Meadow Brook Intermediate is the home for the district's fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students. This facility has a current enrollment of 245 students.
The College Place School District serves a mobile and ethnically diverse population of students. Meadow Brook Intermediate is no exception. Our building mission statement, taken from the Meadow Brook Parent Handbook, speaks to our commitment to educate all children, regardless of mobility, native language, or ethnic origin.
While writing the School Improvement plan for this school year, the staff determined that increased parent involvement was to be one of the goals for the school year.We have concentrated our efforts on implementing our school improvement plan. Past and current training opportunities have reinforced the need for providing continued staff training on how to maintain our Professional Learning Teams. The implementation of the delayed starts continues to enhance the expertise of our own staff in working, training, and supporting each other.
During the 2006-2007 school year, our staff members continue to focus on using several different assessment tools to make classroom, school and district wide curriculum decisions. The Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) continues to provide staff, students, and parents with ongoing data to drive instruction. The staff has also determined that a Common Writing Assessment will be utilized to determine areas of writing needs. As a district wide tool, student progress can be followed from the elementary level through middle school.
As a Title 1 School, the Meadow Brook staff worked to collaborate on Reading, Math and Writing instruction. Reading and Math resources are available to all students in the School Wide Model. Reading, Math and Writing strategies will continue to be the focus of staff development training. A Math continuum and implementation map has been developed for using our instructional resources. We have also provided enhanced Math and Science training to our teachers via grant funds.
Parents and community members have been invited to participate in evening English Language Improvement classes. These classes are offered free of charge. For more information, please contact the Meadow Brook Intermediate school office.
The Accelerated Reader Program continues to provide students with supplemental reading at their individual level. This program allows students to self-select books at their color coded reading level, read independently, and test comprehension on a computerized format. Goals are set and students strive to gain points for rewards both extrinsic and intrinsic. Accelerated Math is also offered to our 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students. These are supplemental computerized programs for providing students extra practice in both reading and math. Student objectives are individually prescribed and monitored.
"Study Club", an after-school tutoring program, is again active at Meadow Brook. Students attend on Monday - Thursday from 3:10-5:00 PM. Students are referred to the homework club by parents and teachers to this program. Students receive assistance provided by tutors for our 21st Century Program. Fourth, fifth and sixth grade students are also provided other fun after school opportunities by our 21st Century Program. Students go to the after school Study Club for academic support and then they can go to other fun student activities each day. This program will continue thru 2008-2009. This extra assistance enables students to receive help unavailable from any other source. The personal contact is also intended to facilitate positive student self-esteem.
Meadow Brook Intermediate staff and administrators will continue to work on school improvement processes and practices. Meadow Brook staff and parents will focus on student learning. Data driven decisions are to be utilized to make individual and School Wide curriculum decisions. If you, as a parent or community member, would like to serve on a school team, contact the Meadow Brook office at 522-3265.
Respectfully,
William James Varady
