MEADOW BROOK INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL
2006-2007 ANNUAL REPORT
Principal's Message
Dear Parents,
Meadow Brook Intermediate is the home for the district's fourth, fifth and sixth grade students. This facility has a current enrollment of 255 students.
The College Place School District serves a mobile and ethnically diverse population of students. Meadow Brook Intermediate is no exception. Our building mission statement, taken from the Meadow Brook Parent Handbook, speaks to our commitment to educate all children regardless of mobility, native language or ethnic origin.
At Meadow Brook Intermediate school we have focused our improvement efforts on academic achievements to help all students learn the Washington State Standards. We have used the following 5 step process to do this important work.
Step 1: We started our school improvement process by reviewing “Best Practices” in schools and districts that are achieving at the 90% level of their students learning academic standards. This promotes the belief that all kids can learn and we control enough variables to make sure all students achieve. We have listed our control variables and built rubrics to model “At Standard Performance” as teachers.
Step 2: Effective collaboration by team/department and school. Each grade level and department has agreed upon “what effective collaboration looks like to improve student achievement”.
Step 3: Each team has selected their beginning Grade Level Expectations (GLE) focus. These objectives are what the team has selected as the most important learning's to start the assessment tracking for each student. Clear agreed upon focus is one of our most important control variables.
Step 4: These goals to improve student achievement are WASL aligned from reviewing our WASL results. This was done by whole group on a late start Wednesday and several teams reviewed each student's WASL results to help them select the areas to focus upon to help all students learn. We still need to fine tune this step to be sure we are addressing the needs from the WASL data.
Step 5: We are using our Late Start Wednesdays to work as collaborative teams to select learning targets, set goals, build assessments, share results of assessments, use student tracking tools to share, monitor & adjust our teaching efforts, thus creating synergistic teamwork to improve student learning for all.
Accountability Support
The breakthrough at our school will be caused by hard work and commitment of teachers using effective collaboration, classroom data systems, and weekly meetings between each grade level/department looking at actual student data for each student. They will discuss in detail, how to help each student make a year's growth in each main subject area, i.e., reading, writing and math. Teachers will share their successes and challenges to assure learning for all students.
If you have questions or need more information please let me know.

Assessment Procedures
A variety of assessment tools are used to measure student learning in the College Place Schools. The Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) are used in addition to daily observations, classroom work, individual reading inventory, STAR Reading test, STAR Math test, and unit tests to help measure how well each child is learning.
In April, Meadow Brook 4th grade students again participated in the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) . Students were challenged with questions requiring writing their reasoning when problem solving. Results are received in fall of 2006.
