Highly Capable Program
---
Challenging gifted students to develop their abilities for personal fulfillment and the benefit of society.
Our philosophy
We believe . . . every human being is of value, with the right to optimal development. Each person is unique from all others, and we must not only acknowledge this but base our programs upon methods of developing and utilizing that uniqueness. We are committed to an educational program that recognizes the special value and needs of the individual student. Providing programs and materials for gifted students who demonstrate the potential for superior talents in academics, creativity and leadership is an integral part of this commitment.
We believe . . . gifted students need a qualitatively differentiated program that takes into consideration individual learning styles and special abilities. The program should help develop self-esteem and skill in dependent study, research, creative thinking and critical thinking.
The purpose . . . of the program is to develop the lifelong learning processes of the gifted. Enhancing the self as a learner and a producer is a central focus. Gifted students should be challenged to develop their abilities for both personal fulfillment and the benefit of society.
History of our program
We have had a program in our district for 15 years. Originally the program started with grades 6, 7 and 8, however, with the construction of Meadow Brook, the program extended to include grade 5. Currently we run two groups of Highly Capable Students. One group meets at Meadow Brook for grades 5 and 6, and the other meets at Sager for grades 7 and 8. Both groups work on a pull-out system. Students are taken out of the regular education classroom and then they meet together with the other highly capable students in their respective school. Students then work individually, in a small group, or as a whole, completing specialized units. Creativity, critical thinking, and future applications are an integral part of our curriculum.
What are the qualifications of a highly capable student?
Multiple criteria for determination of students with superior intellectual ability includes the following:Cognitive ability, which is defined as the complete range of intellectual functions referred to as intellect, intelligence or mental abilities. It includes such psychological concepts as thinking, abstract reasoning, problem solving, verbal comprehension and numerical facility. Evidence of this ability shall be exhibited by student scores in the top ten percent in a cognitive ability test.
Specific academic achievement in one or more major content areas. This shall be obtained from achievement test results appropriate to discriminate academic performance at high levels of achievement in one or more of the following content areas: reading, mathematics, social studies, language arts and science. Evidence of this will be that the student scores in the top five percent in one or more specific academic areas.
Exceptional creativity, which is the demonstration of unique or outstanding creative products and/or demonstration of unusual problem solving ability or other learning characteristics which indicate to teachers, parents, or classmates that the student has the intellectual potential to perform academically at a level significantly higher than norm for the chronological grade level.
What factors determine eligibility?
The school uses a variety of factors when determining who is eligible. Criteria looked at are: the last CTBS or ITBS scores recorded for a child; the child's Cognitive Abilities Test score; teacher input; Gifted Evaluation Scale; G.P.A; and parent input.
Who can be nominated?
Any child can be nominated to participate in the Highly Capable Program. Nominations can come from any source, including teachers, other staff, parents, students and members of the community. If you're interested in nominating your child, please contact your child's school.
