Stephanie Greene visited Davis October 26th, 2009
Stephanie Greene has written more than fifteen books for children from Early Readers to chapter books to middle grade novels, and all of them came from spying, eavesdropping, and keeping a sense of humor while letting her mind go wild. The middle of five children, Stephanie grew up on three wonderful acres on a river in Connecticut. She spent much of her childhood swimming in the summer, skating and sledding in the winter, riding bikes, climbing trees, and reading. She never particularly wanted to be a writer when she was young, but boy, is she enjoying it now. Stephanie's a graduate of the Vermont College MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adults program, as well as RA of SCBWI in North and South Carolina. 3rd grade is working on a research project. Each student selected a wild animal and is learning note taking skills using an online encyclopedia and nonfiction books.
AR Accelerated Reader Our school has a subscription to the web-based version of AR, a Renaissance Learning reading enrichment program. Books have been labeled with a color dot coordinated with reading levels. This guides students to look for books they can read and show comprehension by taking a quiz on a computer. Depending on the difficulty and length of the book, points are accumulated for each student. Most picture books are worth 1/2 point, while some chapter books can exceed 10 points. Students are assigned a reading level range after they take a Renaissance Learning STAR test. This test is repeated several times during the year to help monitor reading growth. Throughout the school year, recognition is given on Fridays for point accumulations and making reading point goals. Three to four goal sessions will be set up for students to work on setting personal reading point challenges. At the end of each goal session an activity will be arranged funded by the College Place P.T.A. Year Long Point Recognition Marks 10 points Certificate, pencil 25 points Certificate, bookmark 50 points Certificate, Lunch with Mr. Drabek 100 points Certificate, End of the year field trip with Mrs. Boe 150 points, Certificate, Stuffed animal 200 points, Certificate, book store coupon 250 points, Certificate, empty book 300 ponts, Special gift
The color circles above demonstrate how the books are coded so students will be able to locate books they will be able to read and answer recall questions.
